Development of Breast in Girls may be described in five stages.

Although these stages are likely to merge into each other, they are useful for girls to understand and monitor growth of their breast without anxiety.

The First Stage extends from birth until the start of puberty during which breasts are flat

Second stage begins at puberty.

Female hormone called Estrogen causes the tissues in the breasts to grow to give the breasts its size and shape.

Breasts start developing usually after the age of eight although in some girls it may start developing as late as at thirteen years.

In the early stages of breast growth, there is only a small mound of tissue called “Breast Bud”.

Then the area around the nipple starts to swell as fatty tissues are deposited under the skin and the first milk glands begin to develop.

Usually the nipples get larger and circular. The round area around the nipple, called Areola becomes wider at this stage.

In the Third Stage, the breasts become cone-shaped, and the nipple and areola become darker.

In the Fourth Stage, the areola and nipple form a separate, mound or bump on the breast.

In the Fifth and final Stage, Girl’s breasts develop fully.

Breasts gradually grow, from conical shape to hemispherical to make the contour of the Breast more prominent

The areola, now at its full size, no longer forms a separate mound but merges with the rounded breast.

The Nipples now project outwards.

Complete Breast development could take one year to six years, although on an average it takes around four years for the breasts to develop fully.

It is advisable to be patient and let the nature play its role.

Growing Breasts is definitely an eventful experience for almost every girl.

It gives them feeling of growing up. Hence, some girls learn to like them.

For some girls development of breasts is a worry, because none of their friends have begun to develop breasts.

Girls, who feel embarrassed about their growing breasts, sink their breasts under the shoulders and lose their upright posture. This may grossly affect their personality.

This could be avoided by learning to accept the change, its importance and by liking their natural body. Mother’s guidance could be of great help in this regard.

Whether your breasts are big or small, pointed or round, you must appreciate them the way they are and dress up appropriately to suit your personality.

Teasing by friends about breasts is sometimes unavoidable, hence learn to ignore such comments and move ahead in life.

Care should be taken while moving in crowd, to prevent groping of breasts by indecent persons. Such abuse, even a stray incidence, may have serious repercussions in adult life, especially during marital relationship.

Girls as well as women, who have gone through such traumatic experience, need to overcome the agony, in the interest of their personal and family life and learn to take precaution to prevent such incidences in future.

Nipples located at the tip of the breast contain smooth muscle fibres and network of nerve endings which make it highly sensitive to touch and temperature.

The dark wrinkled skin of nipple extends one or two centimetres on to the surface of the breast to form a ring around nipple called ‘Areola’.

Areolas have tiny lumps of glands which is normal. These are called ‘Montgomery’s Glands (or Areolar glands or tubercles) which produce oily substance to protect nipples against wetness during breast feeding.

Any touch, even the cold weather or brushing against dress or even a sexual feeling can make nipples hard and erect.

Most girls feel conscious when their nipples suddenly become obvious through their dress. With wearing a thicker bra and appropriate dress it is possible and advisable to hide the erect nipple.

Some girls tend to exhibit their nipples through their dress to attract or impress boys or men. This could prove harmful if displayed in public.

In privacy, wearing transparent dress or wet shirt, displaying tout nipples could arouse the partner for more enjoyable love making  

Although the most important function of nipples is to feed the baby, nipples play great role in sexual acts. The erectile tissues which make them prominent on stimulation not only please a man during sexual act, but also signal him about the arousal of woman and her readiness for the intercourse.

Each developed breast contains fifteen to twenty lobes of glandular tissues arranged in a grapelike cluster. These are called milk glands.

Glandular lobes are surrounded by fatty and fibrous tissues which give a soft consistency to the breast.

Each lobe is drained by a duct opening on the surface of tip of the nipple.

These glandular lobes (mammary glands) are designed to produce milk immediately after birth of a baby to feed the baby.

Breasts are primarily designed to produce milk and to feed babies when they are born.

Production of milk depends on the glands inside the breasts and not on the size of the breast

It is possible that small breasts may produce enough milk to feed triplets and large breast may not have enough milk to feed one baby. Hence, production of milk may vary person to person.

Breasts play an important role in women’s personality, posture and attractiveness.

If a woman desires, breasts of any size can play important role in love making.

Many girls worry about the size of their breasts and their appearance.

They may be concerned by how quickly or slowly their breasts are developing, or by how large or small their breasts will be when they are fully grown.

Such fears are compounded by images in magazines and films depicting ‘perfect’ breasts, indicating the size and shape of breast that would make a woman sexually attractive to men.

One should be aware that in most cases such prominence of breasts is the result of padding and well crafted designer dresses.

Size and shape of breasts may vary woman to woman.

For a woman, having each breast of different size and shape is normal and usually left breast is slightly larger than the right. In fact, two breasts are never of exactly the same size, but the difference is rarely noticeable.

Size of the breast is usually determined genetically and by individual variation in amount of fatty tissues within.

One has to be cautious about the ads which claim to increase the size of the breast

Believing that any exercise, cream, lotions, mechanical devices, or massage can help in increasing size of the breast is wrong, because breasts do not have muscles to increase their size.

Exercises can only develop the pectoral muscle under the breast and give the feeling of prominent breasts.

Men’s fascination for large breasts and women’s desperate need to improve attractiveness and self-esteem has made the ‘Breast Augmentation Surgeries’ popular even though it has several medical implications.

Shape and size of nipples also vary. Some women have large and more prominent nipples than others.

Sometime Nipples point inwards inside the areola. They are called ‘Inverted Nipples’ which need to be corrected at least for the purpose of Breast Feeding.

Some women are troubled with their large breasts or get a complex that men are attracted to them only because of their large breasts.

With the help of relatively simple surgery called ‘Mammoplasty’, wherein fatty tissues are removed scientifically, breasts can be shaped to desired size.

The fact is, there is no evidence to prove that breast size has any relation to woman’s level of sexual interest, or her capacity for sexual response or her ability to attain orgasm.

Actually many women experience little or no sensation when their breasts are fondled or caressed which is as normal for women with large breasts as for those with small breasts.

It is also observed that women, who get sexually excited on stimulation of breasts, respond regardless of their breast size.

Sexual sensitivity of the Breast, Areola and Nipples depends on personal preference, learned habits and biology rather than size of breasts.

Women willing to explore their sexuality can develop sexual feelings of their breasts and nipples. Sexual arousal experienced after stimulation of breasts and nipples by partner, gives great pleasure to the partner, which helps in developing shared involvement in enjoying sexual pleasure.

A bra helps to cover and support the breasts.

Exactly when a girl should start wearing a bra, or whether she needs to wear one is choice of an individual.

Girls having small and firm breasts may not feel need to wear a bra. But, when the breasts are large and moving, wearing of bra will make it less painful and give comfort.

Many girls wear bra to support their breasts against bouncing, and avoid embarrassment caused while they walk, run, dance, jump or play.

Bra also makes girls feel comfortable and less conscious while they are in growing stage.

Woman with smaller breasts may wear padded bra.

Some girls prefer the bra which produces rounded breast shape.

Breasts will not sag and droop immediately, if a girl chooses to go without a bra. But over time, unsupported breasts tend to become elongated and flatter, especially when breasts are larger and heavier.

This happens because of the eventual stretching of ligaments that support the breast from the inside.

Most parents, especially mothers, notice in time when their daughter needs her first bra, whereas some parents wait to be told by their daughter.

Even if a girl does not really need a bra, it’s okay to wear the smaller training bra, than to be told she is too young or does not need one.

Breasts are looked upon differently in different cultures.

Some tribes still exist in which women go bare breasted, whereas most civilised people cover them fully.

Some girls as well as women love to exhibit their cleavage and even push them to bulge out from their dress, as sign of sexuality or to attract men of their interest, while some adventurous even experiment being topless.

In most modern societies female breasts have specific sexual charm and symbolize sexuality, feminity and attractiveness.

Though breasts are fast becoming universally accepted symbol of erotic sexuality, some cultures still give little or no erotic importance to breasts.

Growth of hair around the nipples is natural and normal. One should never pluck them out. Most women are anxious about them because they worry what their partner would say.

It is wiser to trim them regularly rather than trying to remove them permanently.

Few girls get discharge from the nipples, which is usually normal. But, sometimes it may be due to hormonal disturbances. Hence, check up by a doctor is recommended.

If the discharge contains blood or is dark in color, or smells, or there is itching sensation, you must report it to your Doctor, because it may be the sign of infection.

Boys and Men are likely to get attracted to girls because of their growing breasts.

Hence, it is advisable for young girls to cover them properly, and, never to allow anyone to touch your breasts against your wish.

Doctor may examine them in presence of or with permission of your parents

Breasts are sensitive to touch and any stimulation may lead to desire to be loved, or have sex.  Being rebellious to protective parents, and yielding to untimely arousal, may be harmful in future life in several ways.

Take advice of your doctor, to understand various risk factors and consequences of being sexually active during your adolescence.
