 | Teen Sex and Law | |

Sex Education or knowing good things about sex is beneficial more in making married life successful.
However, many Teens opt for sex only to prove their sexuality or consequence of their being grown up or to challenge their parents or elders rebelliously.
Few are educated on fact that having sex just for fun or as tool of entertainment may invite lot of stress and guilt for rest of their life.
Some Teens are under the impression that if they are sexually developed and feel ready to have sex it is normal. They also wrongly perceive that use of Condom, is all that they have to keep in mind to protect themselves from Pregnancy as well as Sexually Transmitted Diseases or Infection (STD, STI).
However, every teen must know that there is a law of the land which does not go by what we feel and mean.
| | | At what age one can give consent for Sex? | |

The law of the Country specifies the age of consent, i.e, the age at which one can have sex or agree to sex.
This law, called "Age of Consent" may specify different age for the entire country or may have different age in different part of the same Country.
Until one reaches this age he or she can't legally have sex with anyone, irrespective of the age of the partner.
Law may act differently if both are of same age, but it is still considered illegal.
There is another aspect here which one must understand. This law is made to protect minors from the injurious medical, psychological effects of Sex at early age, which they are either unable to understand or may not be able to manage or handle in later part of their life.
The enjoyment part of sex may not be worth when it turns into a lot of stress and guilt which can spoil the entire married life.
Adult having sex with a minor even with consent violates the age of consent law and such act could be treated as a serious crime of "Raping the Minor".
| | | Having Sex is my personal matter. Why should Law interfere with my will or personal decision? | |

Not all young people are mature enough to know how to deal when someone tries to get them to have sex.
Some girl teens are even ignorant about the hormonal changes in the body which influence their consent, which make them repent the very next moment after sex.
Boys or Adults who are aware of factors which influence the girls to give consent misuse them to exploit girls. Age of consent law plays important role in protecting minors from such exploitation.
This law also helps in giving justice to parents whose child is exploited, thereby has deterrent effect on Society in general.
| | | But, my parents have no objection if I am taking due care? | |

Your parents do not make the Law.
Similar to restriction put on smoking, drinking or driving, law is made for consent for sex. Consent of a Parent does not make exception to this Law.
The Age of Consent Law specified by the Country is applicable irrespective of whether you are in love, or you have been together for ages, or you have had sex before.
Age of consent is applicable for persons of same sex (gay men or lesbians) even if it is permitted for adults by Law of that Country.
| | | Dating | |

Adolescence is a time when teenagers begin to know about themselves as well as the opposite sex.
In early teens, boys and girls tend to form close friendships with opposite sex.
Parents should never put down such behaviour as it is the natural nourishment for developing their sexuality.
As they get older, boys and girls start going around in mixed groups.
Between the ages of 14 and 16, a boy and a girl may desire spending more time together in privacy (canteen, college steps) but generally not isolated from crowd and get to know each other better. (movie, ride, friend’s house/event/occasion)
Young girls generally start dating from around the age of 14 or 15, while young boys tend to start about a year later.
Dating mostly involves little more than a special friendship. When the compatibility establishes and emotional or sexual attraction continues, the dating becomes physically intense, and progresses into a serious relationship.
Being a source of sexual feeling and excitement, dating is always great fun for boy as well as girl when everything goes on as expected. However, it could be extremely painful if one is not ready for the consequences or unexpected disappointments.
Not everyone is successful in getting a desired ‘Date’ and nor anyone is always successful in getting a Date.
Many Teenagers find it difficult to ask a boy or girl they are attracted to, which is also normal and nothing to worry about.
Many find it hard to take when the attraction is not mutual, or when they are rejected. And when a close friendship comes to an end, the shock is too terrible to accept and quite depressing.
In every such situation, a close friend, brother, sister and at times a friendly relative or even understanding parents plays a responsive role without criticising or demeaning the sufferer.
| | | How parents respond to dating adolescents | |

Some Parents are pleased to see their teenager dating, appreciate their popularity, independence and maturity.
Some Parents give total freedom to child to decide on dating, while some encourage dating actively or passively, whereas some parents totally oppose the idea of Dating.
Responsible Parents should educate the child on sexuality and sexual behaviour along with consequences and responsibilities, so that child does not lose on values and priorities while enjoying freedom and trust of parents.
| | | How relationships begin? | |

Why one person gets attracted to another is a complex matter. All sorts of factors may attract one person to another.
Attraction could be for one or more reasons from the way one looks, the way one dresses, the way one appreciates others, the things one says, the way one listens to others, decision making skills, how one faces challenging issues, the leadership skills, jovial or serious nature, intelligence, sportsperson, agility or just a smile to nothing special.
The attraction could be just to be together or have definite sexual purpose.
Most relationships begin without much of sharing of feelings because there is fear of being embarrassed or rejected.
In initial phases non-verbal communication called ‘Body Language’ plays a major role. We communicate almost everything we mean to say through our body language without using a word. This generally includes expressions of likes, dislikes, intentions, urges, invitation, affection, and even unwillingness to certain actions.
Relationships may last for just one date, or go on for months to years.
During these relationships one person becomes most important person in another’s life.
In good relationship neither partner dominates. The bonding of friendship is not limited to or independent of sexual attraction. There is high regard to each other’s values and self-respect.
Just because a relationship has become established does not mean that it has to become sexual. No one should force or trick another into having sex against his or her will.
Healthy relationship should be used as period to choose the right life-partner after evaluating priorities, values and expectations, even if relationship is limited to just friendship.
Everybody should make a deliberate decision about what is right time and who is the right partner.
Do not forget that having sexual intercourse even with mutual consent is illegal and has serious consequences when one or both partners are below the legal age prescribed by either’s country. (In India it is 18 for Girls and 21 for Boys)
| | | When and Why Relationship Ends? | |

Teenage relationships rarely last long or run smoothly.
Relationship which appears strong at one moment may suddenly collapse even in case of experienced adults.
Separation in most cases is because of miscommunication or misunderstanding. This could be set right by simply talking to each other. Else, separation may become permanent for reasons of ego, pride or self-esteem.
Teenage relations usually begin with friendship and the nature of friendship decides the kind of friendship. It could vary from being just a friend, to critic, flatterer or even a lover.
As most teenage relationships are feeling based, the relationships end when feelings change.
The loss of relationship comes as a shock for the person who is abandoned
With time, the pain of separation usually reduces and in most cases, person becomes wiser and able to laugh at the whole issue for making it so serious.
Accepting the pain and moving on is best way out rather than carrying on even when feelings have disappeared.
Closing the affair is far less hurtful to both than getting frustrated and depressed. Not having peaceful solution sometimes may lead to harmful and coercive one-sided affair.
| | | Sexual maturity and possibility of pregnancy | |

In girls, the first menstrual bleeding or menarche is indication of sexual maturity whereas in boys, it is evident when they ejaculate semen.
First few menstrual periods may occur even without release of egg and in boys ejaculation may not contain sperms initially. However this cannot be always predicted.
Pregnancy is possible in girl even if she has not had first menstrual period if first egg is released and sperms may exist even in first ejaculate in some cases.
However, release of egg or presence of sperm does not mean girl or a boy is matured for having a baby. The changes in body as well as genital organs in girl become suitable for sexual intercourse and for bearing a child only after the age of 18 years.
